Intestinal bacteria make up an animal’s microbi- ome.
It is important therefore to maintain a balanced microbiome in livestock to enhance growth and reduce the incidence of disease.
Bacillus and lactoba- cillus employ multiple modes of action to pro- mote intestinal function and health, while prevent- ing gastrointestinal infec- tions.

Inaccurate claims made in relation to a study on egg and cholesterol consumption and mortality risk
IN response to a new study published in PLOS Medicine on egg and cholesterol consumption and mortality, Australian Eggs urges caution in how the study find- ings should be inter- preted by Australian consumers and health care professionals.
“Observational stud- ies investigating rela- tionships between in- dividual foods or nu- trients and health out- comes provide impor- tant insights, but other factors that influence the relationship can never be completely controlled for in this type of analysis.”
culprit for the link with mortality and suggest replacing whole eggs with egg whites or sub- stitutes, a recommen- dation not supported by an extensive body of research.
According to accred- ited practicing dietitian Sharon Natoli, while the study was conduct- ed over a long period of time and included a large sample size, the observational nature of the results is not able to confirm a causal re- lationship between egg intake, dietary choles- terol and mortality.
Furthermore, evi- dence from an observa- tional study published in May 2020 reported no significant associa- tion between egg in- take and all-cause or heart disease mortal- ity in a representative sample of US adults.
“It is vital to remem- ber that egg yolks are an important part of the whole egg as they contain key essential nutrients, including vitamin D as well as the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for eye health,” Ms Natoli said.
“Individualsconsume a wide variety of foods and make a myriad of lifestyle choices that influence health each day,” Ms Natoli said.
These divergent find- ings indicate a need for further research.
“Eggs are a nutri- ent dense whole food and people can feel reassured about enjoy- ing them as part of a healthy balanced diet that is consistent with the recommendations outlined in the Aus- tralian Dietary Guide- lines.”
In the PLOS Medi- cine article, Zhuang and colleagues point to the cholesterol content of eggs – contained in the egg yolk – as the
