Poultry Hub is industry aligned and impact driven
☛ from P1
We received many ap- plications and are looking forward to supporting a number of these projects into the future.
We have several cur- rently funded research projects that are pro- gressing very well, in- cluding a nutrition pro- ject led by Dr Natalie Morgan of UNE.
Her project is focused on non-starch polysaccha- rides and has delivered an online database that can assist nutritionists when formulating their diets.
We look forward to ex- panding this online re- source over coming years.
As highlighted through- out the 14 years of the Poultry CRC, education is an essential part of build- ing the industry’s future capacity.
Building on the suc- cess of the Poultry CRC’s teacher resource kit, PHA will be further developing existing education tools to provide interactive online resources on PHA’s web- site poultryhub.org
These resources will be complemented by engage- ment activities aimed at both primary and second- ary schools.
These initiatives will be strengthened through spe- cialised education fund- ing that PHA has been awarded recently.
This funding will be instrumental in employ- ing an education officer to continue to build the educational resources and programs begun by the Poultry CRC.
Of particular impor- tance will be the devel- opment of school-farm interactions and education programs aimed at year 9 and 10 students, with the overall aim to build future capacity for industry.
In addition, we have be- gun to scope out an indus- try training package.
PHA will endeavour over time to provide a suite of training pack- ages that can be accessed predominantly online and will measure levels of competency in employees.
We will be holding workshops over the com- ing months to gauge in- dustry training needs and how best to deliver train- ing.
To date, PHA has run a number of successful ac- tivities and events.
These include the open- ing of PHA, Ideas Ex- change, PoultryGrad and a Data Visualisation Workshop designed to bridge the gap between researchers and industry.
All events were well re- ceived, providing a great opportunity for industry, researchers and students to interact.
I was motivated by the enthusiasm and aspira- tions of many of the stu- dents who attended Poul- tryGrad and like the Poul- try CRC, PHA has made a commitment to foster and enable young people to stay in the industry.
PHA will continue to focus on capacity build- ing through the mentor- ing and co-ordination of poultry research students across Australia, through activities that connect stu- dents with industry.
In addition, we are com- mitted to funding targeted internships that directly meet a specific capacity requirement within indus- try.
Further, we will focus on programs and initia- tives that target under- graduate students to join the poultry industry.
I have had the pleasure of being an invited speak- er at a range of industry and educational meetings.
These meetings have ena- bled me to network and en- gage with researchers and industry representatives.
At the Australian Poul- try Science Symposium, I had the pleasure of award- ing the inaugural Mingan Choct award to the best student presenter, Ms Amy Moss from Sydney University.
An important aspect of PH A’s activities is to recognise that two-way communication between researchers and industry is essential to increase the adoption rate of research.
This is because real solutions are much more likely to arise if research- ers start with a clear un- derstanding of the prob- lems the poultry industry faces.
PHA will promote adop- tion of new and existing research outputs by facili- tating two-way communi- cation between research- ers and industry through training, workshops, dem- onstration trials and com- munication activities.
Earlier this year, PHA was able to meet with Australian Agriculture Minister David Little- proud.
It was a great oppor- tunity to discuss PHA’s plans and how we are im- plementing a training and education program for the poultry industry.
The minister was im- pressed when presented with the statistics of how much chicken meat and eggs are consumed in Australia and across the world and the projections for future increases.
Our plan to have an on-site commercial edu- cational poultry farm in conjunction with the Uni- versity of New England’s Smart Farm was of im- mense interest.
There was a great deal of discussion around how we can work towards helping Australians understand where their food comes from and how we can work towards better meas-
ures of animal welfare.
A yearinandIammo- tivated more than ever to ensure PHA delivers industry-relevant research outcomes, great educa- tional resources and poul-
try training packages.
I look forward to contin- uing to build PHA and to maintain the valuable net- works built by the Poultry
CRC.
