Impossible Foods signs major US meat supplier to make its plant-based burgers
REUTERS has reported Californian plant-based burger maker Impossi- ble Foods announced a partnership with major US meat supplier OSI Group, a long-time pro- ducer of patties for fast- food chains, as it ramps up to meet demand from consumers and restau- rants including Burger King.
Burger King started offering the Impossible Whopper in April in 59 stores in and around St.
Louis, and is expected to launch nationally, which would put the plant-based Whopper on the menu in about 7000 Burger Kings.
The partnership be- tween the vegan burger maker and one of the biggest meat suppliers comes as young, environ- mentally conscious con- sumers are feasting on plant-based patties and sausages.
Impossible Foods sen- ior vice president of
product and operations Sheetal Shah said, “We got ourselves into a sup- ply-demand imbalance in which we frankly just did not anticipate the level of demand that came from consumers.”
Shares of rival vegan burger company Beyond Meat Inc are up over 700 percent since it went pub- lic in May.
Beyond Meat recent- ly forecast its revenue would rise over 170 per- cent in 2019.
Privately held OSI, based in Aurora, Illinois, has been supplying Mc- Donald’s for about six decades and has 65 fa- cilities in 17 countries.
Shah said Impossible Foods and OSI will both be investing in OSI fa-
cilities to produce the plant-based burger pat- ties and that multiple facilities in the Chicago area will start supplying Burger King and eventu- ally other customers as well.
The investment details were not disclosed.
When asked if Impos- sible would be serving McDonald’s too, Shah declined to comment on customers, but said: “I see no reason why we shouldn’t be able to go anywhere and every- where.”
OSI North America senior executive vice president Kevin Scott told Reuters when it comes to plant-based meat substitutes, its time and place is right now.
“The work that’s been done in the sector on our behalf and other manu- facturers and companies like Impossible Foods is really narrowing that gap to a point of overall consumer acceptance,” he said.
Just three months af- ter its IPO, Beyond Meat said it was raising more funds in a stock offering to expand its manufac- turing facilities, which are also stretched by booming demand.
Smelling the sizzling opportunity, major meat packers such as chicken producer Perdue Foods and Canadian packaged meat producer Maple Leaf Foods Inc have al- so launched vegan meat substitute products.
Improving pump safety can add to the bottom line
IMPROVING the safe- ty around wastewater pumping can have a sig- nificant effect on mo- rale, but also the bottom line, according to en- gineered pump supplier Hydro Innovations.
By mounting pumps on the surface (instead of in the wastewater pit), operators can access the equipment for monitor- ing or maintenance with- out opening wet well safety covers, eliminat- ing the risk of personnel falling into the pit.
The asset owners see the effects on the bottom line for the entire life of the asset.
A surface-mounted pump does not need a crane to access pumps, so the associated costs of crane operation/use are minimised or eliminated.
Only one operator is needed to safely access and maintain a self-prim- ing surface-mounted pump, producing labour cost savings for the life of the installation.
One operator can ad- just pump clearances on a Gorman-Rupp self- priming pump in min- utes, keeping the pump at its peak operating ef- ficiency for the life of the installation – providing a substantial energy saving for the life of the asset.
series pumps also come with a range of built-in safety features to pro- tect operators and the pump, enabling reliable, dependable and safer pumping of even the most demanding waste- water pumping applica- tions.
These pumps are heav-
ily used by animal pro- cess plants around the country and by business- es that value investing in safety, reliability and quality.
