What is a materiality assessment?
Its vision is to grow the long-term prosperity of the Australian chicken meat industry.
While all topics were seen as important, these had relatively lower im- portance for the industry and its stakeholders. Interpreting the results
A robust and cred- ible process to determine what topics – issues and opportunities – are most important to a business or industry and its stake- holders.
Program objectives from the AgriFutures Chicken Meat Program RDE Plan 2019-2022 are focused on four key areas – food, the environment, the chicken and the con- sumer.
The results of the ma- teriality assessment dem- onstrate the importance of safety, security, wel- fare and wellbeing to the Australian chicken meat industry.
How is a materiality as- sessment used?
To identify priority ar- eas for action in a sustain- ability or industry-wide strategy, and to inform public-facing communi- cations, including inves- tor information.
• Improving food safety of Australian chicken meat
The fact that animal welfare and food safety were the most important topics shows that the industry prioritises the wellbeing of the chick- ens throughout their life cycle in the industry, and ensuring food is safe for Australian consumers.
Why is a materiality as- sessment important?
• Developing and imple- menting measures to im- prove the industry’s im- pact on the environment
Investors are increas- ingly interested in the sustainability strategies and actions of business- es and industries, and in seeing the material topics that inform these strate- gies.
• Improving chicken meat production through the whole supply chain
The importance of top- ics related to food secu- rity, cost of living and the stability of prices and supply chains also shows that the industry plays a crucial role in feeding Australians.
As an example, Austral- ian Stock Exchange guid- ance on environmental, social and governance disclosures requires a materiality assessment. About the industry
Also crucial to the pro- gram are the activities that enable the Australian chicken meat industry to prosper, including train- ing and capacity building opportunities that deliver value to the industry.
Maintaining this stabil- ity and security will be important for the indus- try’s own sustainability into the future.
The Australian chicken meat industry contributes $7.9 billion to the Aus- tralian economy and sus- tains 58,000 jobs across the country.
To support the contin- ued development and sustainability of the Aus- tralian chicken meat in- dustry, the AgriFutures Chicken Meat Program invests in targeted high- impact investment RDE to optimise flock perfor- mance, efficiency and in- dustry productivity.
The relatively high scores for environmental topics such as climate change mitigation, ad- aptation and resilience, feedstock and sustainable packaging are also note- worthy.
It accounts for 0.45 per- cent of Australian gross domestic product and 0.46 percent of Austral- ian employment.
Continuous improve- ment and ongoing RDE is required to enable chick- en meat to retain its posi- tion as the most afford- able and popular meat on the domestic market. Results
These scored highly for importance to both the industry and its stake- holders.
• Improving the indus- try’s ability to meet con- sumer needs.

The industry has grown consistently at 4 percent per annum over the past three decades, with Aus- tralians currently con- suming more chicken meat per annum than any other protein source.
The most material top- ics were food safety and animal welfare, followed by food security, biosecu- rity, climate change and health, safety and well- being.
Finally, transparency, labelling and marketing scored highly, reflecting a common theme from stakeholder engagement that the industry could do more to market itself as an affordable, sustain- able and healthy source of protein.
The chicken meat indus- try plays a particularly significant role in sup- porting employment and economic output in re- gional and rural commu- nities across the country.
Other highly material topics included cost of living, price pressures and stability, and supply
