Upholding a steadfast commitment to service, quality and consistency, the company has become an industry leader in beef processing. The problemPreviously, Meramist faced challenges with the frequent clogging of their pump, mainly due to grass accumulation. However, the introduction of Eradicator Plus technology has effectively addressed this issue, improving operational efficiency and reducing downtime and maintenance costs. The solutionIn December 2023, Meramist made a significant upgrade to its wastewater handling operations with the adoption of the Gorman-Rupp model T4F71SC-B self-priming wastewater pump, also known as the T4 Eradicator Plus. This advanced pump technology has received positive feedback from employees, including Jason Mercer, a leading hand at Meramist.Designed for extremeduty applications, the T4 Eradicator Plus has proven effective in handling liquids containing solid debris such as trash bags, wipes, mop heads, hair, industrial by-products and agricultural waste. Its ability to cut and tear organic solids upon entry into the pump adds to its versatility.Mr Mercer%u2019s review of the T4 Eradicator Plus is both appreciative and practical. He highlighted its efficiency and impact, referring to it as %u201cGod%u2019s gift%u201d, due to its timesaving benefits. He also noted the reduction in labour needed to monitor the pump, emphasising its practical advantages and commenting that he no longer needed to spare a person to %u201cbabysit%u201d the pump, finally having one that could handle the serious amount of grass the business deals with on a daily basis.Gorman-Rupp introduced the %u2018Eradicator Plus%u2019 version of its respected and reliable Super T Series pump range in response to market needs for self-priming pumps that could handle heavy loads of stringy materials such as hay, wet wipes and rags. The Eradicator Plus is equipped with hardened impellers and wear plates, with options to upgrade to high chrome materials for more abrasive applications. This version of the Super T Series is available in 3%u201d, 4%u201d and 6%u201d sizes.More information on these pumps may be obtained from Hydro Innovations at info@hydroinnovations.com.au or call 02 9898 1800. Bacteria found on and in live chickens that survive processing eventually can be unavoidably transferred to the surface of chicken meat. Identifying processing equipment to remove spoilage bacteria or reduce contamination levels benefit the industry with improved shelf-life and reduced spoilage-associated waste. Any improvements that can be made to ensure that chicken meat has consistent and predictable shelflife and food safety qualities will limit the risk of reputational, financial and public health impacts arising from food safety and spoilage events. This study aims to generate pilot scale information on the effectiveness of electrostatic spraying system equipment for lowering the overall total viable count of whole birds and portions.Cold-plasma technology: an innovative solution to controlling spoilage and pathogenic foodborne bacteria on chicken meat %u2013 University of AdelaideChicken meat processing plants employ various methodologies to mitigate bacteria that include the use of food-grade sanitisers. These methods however do not eradicate all bacteria and many can recover following sublethal exposure to sanitisers.Plasma water has properties such as low pH and high concentrations of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that are highly effective at killing bacteria. Once the RONS have reacted with organic material, they are inactivated, leaving behind only pure water. Therefore, plasma water also offers the potential for an ecofriendly approach that eliminates the production of hazardous waste. The project aims to validate the efficacy of plasma water, an ecofriendly solution that effectively reduces bacterial contamination, ensuring a safer and fresher food product for consumers.Update on consumer perceptions and handling practices during purchase, preparation, storage and consumption of chicken meat %u2013 University of AdelaidePrevious survey results indicate that Australian consumers were satisfied with the safety and eating quality of chicken meat and did not have strong concerns about the impact of chicken meat production on animal welfare and the environment. As part of this project, a consumer survey will be conducted to gain current insights into consumer usage, handling of chicken meat after purchase and attitudes toward chicken meat safety. The project will help the industry understand the current food safety drivers for chicken meat and the consumer%u2019s perception about chicken meat food safety.Building people capability and a diverse and sustainable workforceGiven the importance of chicken meat to consumers and the Australian economy, it is critical for the industry to understand its true economic value in Australia and extend this beyond farmgate value.Input-output modelling, which estimates the industry%u2019s %u2018contribution%u2019 to employment and gross domestic product, will be used to assess the industry%u2019s value, complemented by computable general equilibrium models, which assess the industry%u2019s broader impact on the economy. This is particularly useful in the context of the chicken meat industry because the sector is unique in Australian agriculture.
