As tens of thousands flooded Melbourne Park for the Australian Open, one pop-up eatery%u2019s enormous queues stood out among the crowd.Next to a storefront for Fish Bowl, the Sydneybased poke bowl chain, a growing crowd waited eagerly to sample the offerings of El Jannah.Until a few years ago, this unassuming chicken shop could only be found in Sydney%u2019s working-class suburbs. But its collaboration with the international tennis event marks another chapter in the rise of the Lebanese charcoal chicken icon %u2013 born in Granville 27 years ago.El Jannah, which first opened in 1998, has since grown to more than 30 stores, successfully carving out its place in Australia%u2019s competitive chicken market. Experts say it%u2019s all about delivering a distinctive offering to the masses.Hospitality expert Michael Vale said the restaurant%u2019s signature charcoal chicken %u2013 paired with its legendary garlic sauce and warm pita bread %u2013 sets it apart from other fast-food options.Based in Sydney, Mr Vale has closely followed El Jannah%u2019s expansion and noted the %u201cvery strong history of growth%u201d in Australia%u2019s chicken businesses.%u201cI would say chicken is an untapped market in Australia,%u201d he said.%u201cAnd El Jannah, in my opinion, just gave it an alternative to the regular barbecue chicken and deep-fried options. %u201cIt%u2019s got a sense of healthiness about it. %u201cIt%u2019s openly chargrilled, not deep-fried.%u201cI can%u2019t see too much of a secret going on, it%u2019s very good.%u201dEl Jannah opened its second store in 2009, 11 years after its flagship Granville outlet first served customers.
