RECENTLY, ProTen, the Australian Chicken Meat Federation and the Australian Chicken Growers%u2019 Council recognised Tasktrans as the inaugural winner of the Safety Smart Broiler Chicken Farming Award for its outstanding safety initiatives within the broiler chicken industry.Tasktrans, a poultry transportation operator based in Bannockburn Victoria, impressed the judging panel with its strong commitment to physical safety through the installation of pedestrian safety cameras on forklifts and the use of exclusion zones while loading trailers. Tasktrans director Tyson Cawood believed the award would provide recognition to the positive work the chicken meat sector was doing to promote safety.%u201cPedestrian safety is really important in our sector where there is a lot of activity happening and a lot of equipment in use,%u201d Mr Cawood said.%u201cOur crews are going into and out of different farms across every shift, with different operating procedures and protocols at each, so having clear safety protocols are vital.%u201dTo further support workplace safety, Tasktrans has integrated Dashpivot, a comprehensive online safety platform. From the moment I arrived in the River Room, I felt the energy and anticipation in the air. We started the day with tea and coffee %u2013 a small but opportune moment to connect with familiar faces and meet new colleagues from across the industry.The morning sessions set the tone for the day, beginning with a warm welcome and industry update from Australian Eggs managing director Rowan McMonnies. He spoke candidly about the challenges facing our sector and the opportunities that lie ahead, grounding us in the reality of what%u2019s at stake. One of the highlights for me was the session on avian influenza outbreaks. Victoria%u2019s chief veterinary officer Graeme Cooke shared key learnings from recent experiences %u2013 the depth of his knowledge was remarkable. Following this, Brendan Sharp%u2019s presentation on aerosol spread gave us a clearer picture of how disease transmission occurs and the urgent need for enhanced biosecurity measures. It%u2019s not often you leave a session with both a sense of urgency and a renewed commitment to finding solutions, but these talks achieved just that.After morning tea, we shifted focus to production challenges, with Mini Singh hosting a series of engaging talks. Peta Taylor%u2019s presentation on smothering was eye-opening %u2013 she brought fresh perspectives and practical suggestions to address this issue. Andrea McWhorter%u2019s discussion on singleuse vaccines was equally compelling, demonstrating the potential for innovation to solve longstanding problems. Amy Moss shared some fascinating research on layer nutrition and Peter Groves rounded out the session with an update on spotty liver disease.
